Associate Professor Rimi Khan is Vice Chancellor’s Principal Research Fellow at RMIT University’s School of Fashion and Textiles.

Based in Melbourne, her work draws on research in Vietnam, Bangladesh, Singapore and Australia to understand how culture shapes sustainable transitions.

Her research engages with artists, designers, entrepreneurs, sustainability advocates, policymakers and Indigenous knowledge holders. Rimi is especially interested in how regenerative practices affect diverse communities, and how local knowledge can guide systemic change.

Rimi has published extensively in the fields of fashion, creative labour, youth studies and diversity politics in the arts and cultural industries. She is author of Fashion for other worlds: value, power and enterprise in Asia (Manchester University Press, 2027). Her other books include Art in community: the provisional citizen (Palgrave, 2016), Dây/dó (here/there): cross-cultural craft and design exchange (RIT Press, 2026) and Youth arts: creative production and skills for work (Bristol University Press, 2026).

Rimi’s work has appeared in numerous academic journals, including International Journal of Cultural Policy; Cultural Studies; Continuum; Journal of Sociology; and Journal of Youth Studies.

Prior to joining RMIT, Rimi was Senior Lecturer in the Department of Communications and New Media, National University of Singapore, and convenor of the Master of Arts (Arts and Cultural Entrepreneurship). She lectured in the School of Communication and Design at RMIT University in Vietnam, and completed her PhD in Cultural Studies at The University of Melbourne.
